This month's Stereo Review has a review of Pioneer's second generation player, the 505, and an article on the format battle for DVD audio, the CD replacement. It is interesting that the audio format has not been standardized yet, when DVD movie discs are becoming commonplace. If they really wanted DVD to replace both CD players and VCRs, you'd think they would have agreed on a format so that today's players could play the audio discs, which I understand will be in an incompatible format with today's DVD players. Uh, who the hell is in charge here? If we could agree on a friggin' standard, maybe DVD would take off! Hello? Anyone listening? (oh, and no info on Pioneer's decoder in the article, but they liked the player, except for the backwards play that could not go frame by frame, can only do that in forward mode. So when does Basic Instinct come out on DVD? There is one scene that merits a high definition frame-by-frame examination . . . )
