Pat,

(IMO) From reading previous posts about a month or so
back, yes T can have two contractors. But what I've
always seen as part of the problem, is that AT&T wants
to contract with a 'more established customer'. They
probably would love to have Lucent (maybe their even
obligated in some way, from the previous spinoff). But
the fact is that CIEN has a well tested product and
Lucent is just a lot of talk at this point.

AT&T and other companies need to start work soon.
Also, large companies like AT&T probably like to have
more than one contractor to keep competition honest...

I see AT&T's data business as it's main strength. If it
gets behind in this to some serious competitors, the
company will fall apart. They can't seem to generate
growth any other way. (Possibly, at some point in
the future, it may be a good short).

I'll keep looking into all this just as I'm sure
the rest of the thread is doing. Read AT&T's earnings
report in WSJ, and I think that will give you another good
feel for the state of the telephone market. Mike
Armstrong(?) has a hell of a job to do. He better get
on the stick PRONTO!!

Joe (IMO of course!)
