Asparagus is the harbinger of spring!!! For all of us!!! Since this is an equal opportunity thread, I think I should stop making phallic jokes for a moment and share a nice lesbian asparagus recipe. I am sure the title of the recipe will incite some jokes, though.
For those of you who are happily oblivious, Alice B. Toklas was Gertrude Stein's long-time lover, and wrote a whole cookbook, which is a cult classic from the thirties, I think. She liked to cook with marijuana, as I recall, but obviously my memory is shot because as I write all of this sounds a little vague.
Alice B. Toklas' Asparagus in Whipped Cream
1-1/2 to 2 pounds asparagus, trimmed, peeled 4 T unsalted butter 1 cup heavy or whipping cream 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Cook the asparague in boiling salted water, or steam, until just ender. Place the drained asparagus in a shallow serving dish, and keep it warm in the oven.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter with 1/4 cup heavy cream over low heat. Stir, and pour over the asparagus; return the asparagus to the oven.
Beat the remaining 3/4 cup cream with the salt and pepper until stiff. Spoon over the hot asparagus. Serve immediately.
