David, our family was thinking of moving to Hawaii last year. After thinking about it, I was the only one really interested, so the idea was dropped here, but while I was pondering it I got a Sunday Honolulu newspaper, and was just stunned to see how much less houses cost, for example, than they did five years ago. The rate of unemployment in the tourist industry is pretty high, also.

There was a lot of Japanese investment in San Francisco, as well as Hawaii, and there is some selling-of-assets-and-going- home activity here. Obviously, with Japan's economic problems their citizens don't feel quite so much like travelling extravagantly and often, either. Globalization of economies is tricky--it's wonderful during boom times, but then all of a sudden things can change from forces that are invisible to you, that you have to read about in financial newspapers to understand.

Most veterinarians don't recommend store bought flea collars. They can be dangerous to your cat. You are lucky that there is a whole new generation of flea killing products available, but again, I think your vet would be the best person to ask for advice on the best one. Here there is a service called FleaBusters, that will come to your house once a year and put down some powder that is non-toxic, and will guarantee to keep your home flea free. I refuse to use any poisons anywhere in my home, so that was a great find for me.

Good luck!! Have you tried ignoring them, incidentally? Fleas are seasonal to some extent--there will be times when you won't see so many.
