Good point about some baffling reactions to various earnings. I like IBM's future, but I was surprised it moved up so strongly after beating estimates by only 1 cent/share.

I double checked my math, and found that yes - SMMT actually earned more before taxes this quarter than the prior (4th quarter 1997) one. This quarter SMMT earned 22.2 cents/share pre-tax, on a fully diluted basis, while they earned 20.9 cents/share pre-tax, fully diluted in the last quarter of '97.

Also, the 1st quarter has been by far the weakest for SMMT in recent years, while the 4th quarter has been by far the strongest. Adjusting for this apparent "seasonality", SMMT's 1st quarter this year looks exceptionally strong. Hard to say where the stock is going in the short term, but I definitely like it longer term. Perhaps Needham will now reiterate that $22-24 price target (6-12 month).
