Update from Japan
Excerpt from Daily Yomiuri newspaper -Tokyo - April 23rd 1998

Major domestic automakers showcased to foreign journalists the technological advances the companies have made to promote environmental protection.

At the gathering, about 70 correspondents asked questions of engineers from Nissan,Honda, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota on their plans in this critical area of development.

The firms concentrated on improvements in fuel effeciency in view of calls to cut carbon dioxide emmisions to prevent further global warming.

"We need to make efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emmisions while seeking exhaust that does not contain harmful elements" commented Noriyuki Kishi, chief engineer of Honda.

However, it is undeniable that the focus of the discussions at this symposium stressed the advanced technology of Japanese automakers and efforts to learn of the latest developments and business strategies which are taking place around the world.

Clearly the Japanese have lagged behind in this area.

It looks to me like they and a few other auto manufacturers could use some help.
