Rewritable DVD will need to use the full MPEG-2 codec (encoder/decoder) because you need MPEG-2 encoding to put video on the DVD. That is a different chip than the simpler MPEG-2 decoder that would be used to play video off a DVD-ROM. CUBE is one of the few companies that have a single chip MPEG-2 codec.
