I really think Intel is whistling in the dark here. They're going to get clobbered eventually with the WinChip. They've been lucky with yield problems with AMD and Cyrix and they quite frankly compete rather well against these guys because they have better yields. WinChip has got to be the one that's really got them worried, in the long run.

Because of this, I expect to see Intel make a big announcement of a new platform with backward compatibility and RISC architecture. The Pentium Pro/II already has a RISC core. I expect to see it within the next 6 months. It'll be a lot like the Apple PowerPC RISC offering where they can advertise speed improvements just based on RISC. It'll offer speed increases of 2-3 times in native mode. They'll try to put X86 in the same boat as the legacy ISA. That will be their way to try and leave X86 in the dust and let their competitors slug it out for < $400 systems, while they try to keep their systems at or above $1000.

Will it work? It might not find as willing a market as they would hope, if everyone has to buy their software again. But wait, it's backwards compatible... and it has... and...

Yep, this X86 stuff is getting to be a real drag for Intel.
