More about the Storage Tek/Compaq relationship.

techweb.com

Excerps
<< David E. Lacey, StorageTek executive vice president and chief financial officer, said Compaq (company profile) is funding research into storage area networks (SAN) and virtual storage, including a virtual storage manager, for the open systems market. >>

and

<< StorageTek will use the funds to develop an open systems Fibre Channel switching device that allows switching between tape and disk products in a SAN, Lacey said. >>

Just what is a virtual storage manager? Is that equipment or just software? Their switch device? Sounds very intriguing. Is this going to be technology taken from Brocade, which has been the rumor for some time (ie. STK oeming brocade switches)??? The article says the switch will be ready by year end and the storage manager will be ready to go in 1999.

all imho
