Maduna supports SouthernEra in land dispute

David McKay

MINERALS and Energy Minister Penuell Maduna said
yesterday government would back SouthernEra, a
Toronto-listed mining company, in its high court bid to
win disputed mineral rights in the Northern Province.

SouthernEra was recently prevented from mining the
diamond-rich Marsfontein farm by individuals claiming to
be heirs of original title owners who first registered the
property in 1920. The matter was taken to court and is
unresolved.

Maduna's green paper on a new minerals policy frowns
on handing down mineral rights in perpetuity.

The matter is complicated by the involvement of De
Beers which has offered to pay the heirs up to an
estimated R75m for the rights if they win their court case
against SouthernEra.

Maduna's support of SouthernEra was confirmed by
Patrick Evans, the SA trade consul in Toronto.
