Says Benhamou: "Going up directly against Cisco is the wrong approach. Surround and conquer works a lot better."

Interesting comment. Yesterday I was thinking about Chambers and wondered if he'd studied the battle of Waterloo. Or read the life of Napoleon, for that matter. I have a lot of respect for him and suspect he knows both well. If Benhamou's as savvy, then we have a fair match. Of course you have to consider COMS' alliance with NN/Siemens for it to be even.

He does say that by obviating the need for routers in
local-area networks, layer 3 switching will have a huge long-term
effect on the networking landscape: "Once the router is eliminated,
the competition between Cisco and everyone else in the industry
becomes even."

NN has one of the best layer-3 switches in the industry:
newbridge.com

Herndon, Virginia, March 17, 1998 - Newbridge Networks today announced that its switched routing system was judged the most cost effective among the Layer 3 switching solutions evaluated by Renaissance Worldwide Inc., a leading information technology consultant. The Newbridger switched routing solution frees network managers to spend less time "fighting fires" and more time focusing on existing and emerging end-user requirements. The industry's only Multiprotocol-over-ATM (MPOA)-based solution, the Newbridge system was shown to deliver cost reductions of nearly twice that offered by traditional and non-standard-compliant networks.

Some times I feel as though I'm watching the Superbowl with bets on both teams. Whoever falls behind gets the biggest cheers. :)

Later --
