Hi Pat,

In spite of what Eric Benhamou thinks his little surround and conquer Cisco argument is very weak. While he is looking at circling around and attacking Cisco, Intel is making a play on his low-margin interface card and modem territory. While he is dreaming about his proprietary software-based PalmPilot (Which is the best thing that U.S. Robotics brought to the table, by the way!) Microsoft is opening up Windows CE as a viable handheld alternative.

If Mr. Benhamou thinks that his layer 3 switches are going to eliminate Cisco's routers, he is dreaming! The reason he doesn't want to go head-to-head against Cisco is because he knows that he would get his head chopped off.

Let's face it, the 3Com - Newbridge Networks alliance is about the only thing that 3Com has going for them. Without NN, 3Com is a commodity seller of interface cards, modems, and low to mid range switches. In other words nothing to threaten Cisco with.
