LONDON -- Personal computer factory shipments in Europe, Middle East and Africa rose 21% in the first quarter from a year ago, market researcher International Data Corp. said Friday.
IDC said "pricing actions across the region played a significant role as the sub-$1,000 dollar PC became a reality, stimulating demand across all sectors."
Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) was the top vendor in the region, with a 14.2% market share. International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) was second at 8%. Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (HWP) market share rose to 7.5% from 5.3% on "considerable investment" in manufacturing for its corporate desktop line and aggressive pricing. Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) held a 7.2% market share, up from 5.2%. Rounding out the top five, Vobis group, consisting of Vobis, Maxdata and Peacock, held 5.4% of the market, up from 4.0%. |
