David,

Epidemics of bubonic plague still occur with some frequency, notably in the Southwest. Here in California, parks, national forests, and wildlife preserves have been closed to the public for varying lengths of time because the disease was found to be present in the fleas there. I'd have to check health department record for the number of diagnosed cases of bubonic plague but do know that the disease is not extinct and the risk is always there.

Several years ago, a hospital in California received a bubonic plague patient. By the time this patient's test results were returned and the definitive diagnosis made, well over a hundred people required bubonic plague prophylaxis. I am not comfortable with further reporting on that case in a public forum.

I'll agree that Flea collars probably do not pose a grave threat to most people or animals, but exposure to their chemicals is not a good way to find out if you or your pet is hypersensitive. I've seen some pretty severe reactions in humans and in their pets.

I'll take your word for the hazards related to cutting up flea collars in vacuum cleaner bags. For me to say that I and my pets never had any problems from my doing that would be beside the point would be along the same line as the hazards related to animals wearing flea collars and the people who love them,

BTW, do they still quarantine the household pets of people moving to Hawaii for six months prior to allowing the pets into Hawaii proper? I heard also that you guys down there haven't seen a case of rabies for around a hundred years.

Holly
