I actually had a copy of Amerigo Vespucci's memoirs, published in 1790, But, where I respect the right to call the landmass the Americas, Canada has a very special history. It was not a group of federated states at any time but until patriation of the constitution remained as a colonies of Britain. It became a confederation in 1867 with 4 provinces. All other areas remained as colonies or British governed territories under treaty. So technically we were not "Americans" as that would have implied some alter sovereignity. And I have never heard Canuck one do anything but reel in shock if called American, we know it refers to USAnians. But we did confederate under the British North America Act, an act of English parliament. Until 1958 I believe, any citizen born in Canada was and remains a British "subject". The USA's territory was always referred to as the American Colonies. North of there was Upper and Lower Canada.

Are we the Confederated Dominion of Canadian Provinces of America?

I liked the Dominion of Canada. The fr. liberals did not like it as Dominion was too Royal. They changed (unified) the services too. Why? The Royal Canadian Air Force, The Royal Canadian Navy.
