Years ago I knew a guy that was suspected of shielding a few bucks from the IRS. They never nailed him, but an auditor literally lived with and hounded him for a period of some months. He never 'fessed up, but later claimed that the ordeal was such that if he had, he damn well wouldn't again. In the interim, IRS claws have grown much, much sharper.
