Pigboy, More on STK , VSM and FC Device:

zdnet.com

<<Two products are expected to ship later this year, said sources close to the Louisville, Colo., company. The first, an unnamed Fibre Channel connectivity device, will help speed data transmission. The second product is expected to be an NT version of StorageTek's Virtual Storage Manager.>>

<<VSM, which was announced last fall and is in beta now, helps managers capture more of a tape's storage capacity. It features three components--a storage subsystem that acts as a buffer, a virtual tape control system and a GUI.

Data is written to a buffer where it is "stacked" until it can be written. This also allows users to continue to access data without the need to recall it from the tape, thus speeding users' access to the data. Each Virtual Tape Storage Subsystem has up to 64 drives and 100,000 virtual volumes.

Pricing for the Unix version of the software and corresponding hardware ranges from $300,000 to $2 million.>>
