Steve and all, "Europe, Middle East, Africa PC Shipments Rose 21% In 1Q" Dow Jones Newswires -- April 24, 1998 LONDON (Dow Jones)--First-quarter personal computer factory shipments in Europe, Middle East and Africa rose 21% from the year-ago quarter, according to International Data Corp.
In a press release, the research group said "pricing actions across the region played a significant role as the sub $1,000 dollar PC became a reality ... stimulating demand across all sectors."
International Data said Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) was the top vendor in the region, with a 14.2% share of the market, compared with 13% a year ago. International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) was second, with an 8% share, compared with 8.9%. Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (HWP) market share rose to 7.5% from 5.3% on "considerable investment" in manufacturing for its corporate desktop line and aggressive pricing. Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) held a 7.2% market share, up from 5.2%. Rounding out the top five, Vobis group, consisting of Vobis, Maxdata and Peacock, held 5.4% of the market, up from 4.0%.
