Interesting post. I think the wild card at the moment is what CPQ does with Alpha technology. When DEC was pushing Alpha, Intel really didn't have to much to worry about - DEC's volumes were too low to affect anything. But CPQ has huge volume and is also Intel's biggest customer (also AMD's biggest customer). If they push Alpha hard they could hurt not only Intel's current and future 32 bit products but also merced.
MSFT does have competition in a high growth SW market - embedded systems. The handheld and specialty computer market is not owned by Windows CE, and MSFT has a lot of work to make that product win. Dedicated special purpose machines are also starting to appear for web servers, print servers, and other 'function specific' computing needs, and here also MSFT does not have the right products to control the market. These segments will have big volume, comparable to the current PC market. MSFT could have a real challenge in this space over the next several years.
