Pittsburgh, PA - February 24, 1998 - FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE), a global supplier of networking solutions based on an Intelligent Infrastructure, today announced that according to a recent study issued by The Dell'Oro Group, a Portola Valley, California-based networking industry research firm, FORE was the clear market leader in the fourth quarter (Q4) 1997 market for ATM enterprise backbone switches. The Dell'Oro study also reported a revenue growth rate of 77 percent for the ATM enterprise backbone switch market in 1997, with anticipated revenue growth of 60 percent for 1998. FORE's success is further supported by an International Data Corp. (IDC), Framingham, Massachusetts, Year End Review 1997 "FLASH" which corroborated FORE's clear leadership position for ATM campus LAN switches in the fourth quarter of 1997. Additionally, IDC reported that FORE maintained the 1997 annual market leadership position. IDC also expressed its belief that, long-term, ATM will be the strategic backbone of choice for larger enterprises. "These findings continue to support FORE's leadership position in the ATM enterprise backbone switch market space," said Ron McKenzie, vice president of strategic marketing at FORE Systems. "Additionally, the studies reinforce ATM as the technology of choice to meet the demands of today's networked applications and enterprise networks, building networks that last."
Additionally, ATM's role in supporting mission-critical networks was highlighted in a recent Sage Research, Inc., (Natick, Massachusetts) survey, conducted for the ATM Forum, of ATM enterprise customers. Results showed that mainstream businesses were deploying ATM to meet the needs of today's networked data application requirements. Sixty-two percent of survey respondents chose ATM to provide increased bandwidth; 33 percent to support high-volume data traffic; and 32 percent installed ATM to "future proof" their network to support high volume data and delay-sensitive applications.
"The need for high-capacity networks is the driving force behind ATM deployment," said Kathryn Korostoff, president of Sage Research. "Our research showed that 71 percent of respondents first deployed ATM in their campus backbones and have continued to deploy ATM in other portions of the network," she added.
