Weaving news into Intranets

WavePhore Inc. next week plans to announce a service that allows companies to integrate customized news and business data - about competitors, customers, technologies and themselves - with internal corporate information on their intranets.

The service, called Newscast Access, addresses the growing interest in corporate "knowledge management," which refers to exploiting accumulated and new information to the best competitive advantage.

Though other companies - including Dow Jones Interactive Group and NewsEdge Inc. - offer similar services, WavePhore said that, for customized data, its modular offering makes significantly smaller setup and hardware-hosting demands on customers than competitive services.

"What we're trying to do is make it easy for the IS [information services] department, not make it a burden," said Elise Soyza, director of marketing at WavePhore.

Financial services provider First Chicago NBD Corp. - a beta client - uses the system to allow about 3,000 employees to retrieve dossiers and stock prices on corporate customers and to stay current on deals in progress, Soyza said.

There are five modules: news headlines hyperlinked to full-text articles from leading financial wires; stock prices updated every 15 minutes; corporate dossiers; quick searching of the previous seven days' news; and archival searching of WavePhore's multimillion-document base, with information going back six months.

Pricing was not disclosed.
