1000 fibers is a little high.
Most of the Qwest network is 96 fibers. Of that 96 GTE bought 24 and Frontier bought 24 which leaves Qwest with 48. In some segments Worldcom bought 24 and other segments Worldcom bought 36. In segments where they sold more than 48 generally they will install more than 96 so that they can keep 48 for their use. The thing is that with dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) you can put several independent circuits over the same fiber. It use to be you could put 6 or 12 over a fiber but with new technology they are now talking 128 or maybe even higher. That is why I originally said that it isn't how many fibers you have but were they go that is important. As time goes by the same fibers will carry more and more information.
That is why Qwest can give away band width as a PR deal and not miss it. That is also why Qwest stated that "Upon completion of the Qwest Network, each of Frontier and GTE will have a fiber network similar in geographic scope and potential operating capability to that of Qwest." The only real advantage that Qwest might have is that others paid for their network for them.
I think Qwest had a great idea having others build their network for them only they also built their competition at the same time.
This will be an interesting one in the long run.
