Have all of you been keeping up with the other Y2K related threads here on SI? The "Year 2000 (Y2K) Embedded Systems and Infrastructure thread has a lot of very disturbing information.

One of my concerns is the level of compliance with the power grid, utilities, nuclear generating stations etc. My own contingency planning will be of little value if there is a lengthy disruption in my local power supply (not to mention that a large amount of our power comes from a nuclear program that is infamous for its inept management).

My difficulty is that I can't afford to make make too much of an investment in making my new home less dependent on the public supply of power. I would also be rather frustrated if I did make a large investment and it turned out to be for nothing. Most of my plans so far will be of value whether or not there is a major Y2K problem.

Any thoughts from the group?
