A couple of hairs for this bowl of soup...
1. About the only thing "cheap" in this capacity is the current labor component. The buildings, land, and equipment pool got paid for with something besides devalued won.
2. True. Local Asian demand has been lowered. Trouble is, ex Japan, it didn't amount to that much in the first place. 12-15% maybe, going to what? 8-10%? The two big markets for disk drives, DRAM and PC's in general are still North America and Europe. Europe has been a bit healthier than expected while we seem to be on a bit of a PC diet.
3. Seagate, QNTM, WDC, etc all build their drives over there same as MAXTOR and Fujitsu. I think Seagate was Thailand's biggest employer ... may still be. They get the same local cost benefits of local devaluations as everyone else.
