Compaq is down to 5 weeks in the channel per EP at the shareholder's meeting, their goal is 2 weeks on desktops and 4 weeks on servers and workstations. They are about there and not 2-3 times HP. EP claims they will be at inventory target by mid-june. Factory is back up to full production. If they were still way off on inventory they would not be doing 24 hr factory runs.
Also HP recently screwed up their relationship with MSFT by several very public announcements that the shift to NT was a mistake and they were moving their focus back to Unix. With CPQ buying DEC, MSFT now has only one committed NT enterprise player to partner with. I think HP's claim is marketing hype designed to rally customer support and stem losses to Sun in the Unix space. HP has a very conflicted internal model, this is one of the reasons Belluzo quit.
