The future of clustering is largely independent of changes to the programming model. Most of the current work is toward a 'single system image' which creates a programming view of resources which is independent of the underlying hardware. In this programming model everything is a cluster, just sometimes a cluster of 1 machine (i.e. a regular stand-alone computer). MSFT has done a lot of work investing in this area including a multi-million investment in joint R&D with Tandem, and a similar arrangement with DEC.
