Thomas, natural gas is the feedstock for methanol, which is the targeted early stage source of hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles by both Daimler and Toyota. The latest Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Letter mentions a rumour of another big fuel cell alliance for automobiles coming soon which it speculates will involve Enron, a large natural gas supplier in the US. So the answer is that natural gas is already a potential source of fuel for fuel cells. Your comment is bang-on.
