Agree.

I disagree. I'm coming at you as a reputable consultant of 15 years thats involved with decision makers from PCs to main frames. Managers are fed up with paying high prices for main frames and are looking for cost effective solutions. Granted - you can't process 18 million credit card transactions a night on WINTEL (yet) but there are a lot of systems being rehosted onto client/server, mostly Unix at this time. But one of my current customers that has about 4,000 Suns and several big main frames is starting to buy NT boxes. Reason: Better OS than Solaris and the hardware is MUCH cheaper. Another large customer of mine has ridden SGI's hardware wave since '85 (which coincidently is when I jumped in on SGI) is now buying NT. Once again, cheaper, better OS. Fundamentally (as a programmer and decision maker) I think Unix in its current state is one heck of a hack job since its mutated over many years while NT is is pretty clean. The downside on NT at this point is the hardware its available on is limited but that will change.

... simply because they don't have the features or support of NT. Developers are are attracted to NT and Unix because they can develop the core code once and easily port it to a bunch of hardware. OS/2 and Apple flop and will continue to flop. Software developers are going to develop on the platform on which they can sell the most units. If that spans hardware, thats better (another example of this: Oracle)

Agree. But they aren't going to pay the price if there is a good
alternative. Their shareholders will shoot them wholesale.

Competition with whom? OS/2 and apple??? MS is going after Unix.

Microsoft has had a bad name but I'd say in the past 18 months it has
started to improve. Smart managers make cold and calculating decisions about development platforms based upon financials - not emotions.

Good luck!
