Perhaps I should have referenced Revenue growth instead of Unit growth.

INTC is cutting people because they can't grow revenue. THey haven't since the P133.
Bill does not think Win 98 is a big deal, nor does he think it will drive a massive upgrade cycle.

All Merced will do is lower the cost of a PII400 that is not much faster than a machine that costs 30% less. When the 450's come out, the 266's will fall below $1300.
I am still of the opinion that a P200MMX is all that is needed by 75% of PC buyers.
With Merced, the competition at the high end will be so intence that no one will make lasting profits.

Lets face it, For most of us, the PC is becomming a fancy type writer or calculator, Maybe a very complicated TV if you want to include the web, but the last mile bottle neck is currently not a surmountable hurdle so other than looking up your horriscope or checking your stock quotes or typing senceless messages on SI, the web is only good for ordering a DELL PS.
The price trend of a usable PC is starting to look like the price trend of a calculator.
