I picked this off on the business wire. Do not know if it competes with NCI. Low-Voltage CompactFlash Cards and Adapters Provide Complete Solutions for Users of Mobile Consumer Products 06:44 Nov 05, 1996 EST
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1996--SMART Modular Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:SMOD) today announced the immediate availability of low-voltage CompactFlash small-format, removable memory cards and adapters.
SMART's new product line will offer substantial benefits to manufacturers and users of mobile consumer products such as digital still cameras, digital audio recorders and telephone answering devices, palmtop and ruggedized handheld computers, PDAs, cell phones and game machines.
SMART initially will offer a 4 Megabyte version of the CompactFlash Card, with 8MB and 16MB versions expected to follow in Q2/CY97. Designated SM9FLATA04CMPCT, the 4MB-density card will be capable of storing 28 high-density pictures, or 60 low-density, in digital still cameras.
Users will be able to remove the card from the camera, insert it into a SMART-supplied adapter, and plug it into their PC for viewing and modifying before printing the pictures.
In recording devices, the 4MB card will be able to record up to one hour of audio. The 4MB SM9FLATA04CMPCT CompactFlash Card is priced at $99 in quantities of 100. In order to offer customers a complete solution, SMART also manufactures adapter cards that enable the cards to be plugged directly into a PC Card drive.
"As an Executive Member of the CompactFlash Association (CFA), SMART is the only member other than SanDisk to offer the small-format memory card in both 5V and 3V versions," said Bill Johnston, SMART's Director of Marketing. "SMART is the only CompactFlash supplier to manufacture CompactFlash cards also designed to operate as low as 2.5V."
Johnston added, "Low-voltage operation is particularly advantageous to consumers as the batteries in their handheld devices, such as digital cameras, operate longer between recharges. Products that incorporate CompactFlash cards manufactured by SMART will continue to operate as the batteries discharge down to the 2.5V level, while other products will cease operation when the batteries discharge below 3V."
"The SM9FLATA04CMPCT is designed for 10,000 insertions," stated Dhaval Brahmbhatt, SMART's Vice President of Technology Development. "For example, a digital camera user could store 22 high-resolution pictures as many as 10,000 times in the lifetime of a single card."
Brahmbhatt continued, "The 14-mil PCB used for CompactFlash is 22% thinner than a Type II PC Card and uses special TSOP devices for its circuitry. SMART's extensive SMT manufacturing and testing expertise is well suited to CompactFlash card production.
"Initially, the new line will be produced at SMART's manufacturing facility in Fremont, Calif., where design and manufacture are tightly linked. However, as volume increases due to demand, the firm's additional manufacturing capacity in Puerto Rico and Scotland will be available to ensure uninterrupted supply for customers worldwide."
