There is nothing magical about the Y2K "problem" except that it has captured the popular imagination due to its tie-in with the new millenium.

Yes & no.

The "magical" (bizare choice of words) is: (1) it's a 'fixed' deadline (not just confined to 1/1/00), (2) it happens pretty much simultaneously to everyone, and (3) demand on scarce resources occurs in a very narrow timeframe.

I won't touch the other part of the millennial stew... I'll leave that to Gary North & Co. & the folks who really like to tilt at windmills.

The primary difficulty with Y2K is that software maintenance is a dirty word. Somehow we've been able to continually delude ourselves that 'this time' we'll re-write that application correctly because we've finally found the holy grail of magic tools... CASE, Visual Basic, Java, Object Oriented databases, pick your pipedream...

BTW... you never did counter with what personal software development/management experience you have that proves that Capers Jones is a loony...
