mr funk man - if there were no mm's there wouldn't be anyone to put up capital and provide liquidity. most day trader's do not position stock over night - that's why they are called day traders. some institutional customers try to play on instinet to buy or sell a position. this is a dangerous game for them. if a big piece trades away they will not be protected on the volume because they are not using a mm. and #2 the mm can buy all of their stock take the offerings and trade it for more than an 1/8. something that could never be done if they had used a mm directly. cp
