tom: I would think for consumers to spend freely their confidence level have to be pretty high and this is only possible if their economy performs well.I don't know whether merely pumping money into the system will do the trick but who am I to contradict Paul Krugman I assume he should know what he is talking about. Having said that I would think what is needed in Japan is some fundamental structural changes and not stopgap measures which can only serve as a band-aid at best and besides they have been trying this sort of half baked ideas for a while and they don't seem to work.
