Orckit Communications announces the first shipment of its ORvision II ADSL commercial units
08:17 Nov 06, 1996 EST

TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1996--

World's First Commercially Available Echo Cancellation ADSL
modem shipped to France Telecom, selected to supply ADSL to
Telia, Sweden

Orckit Communications Ltd. (NASDAQ:ORCTF) has begun shipping its Orvision II Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) modems to France Telecom-CNET, the national telephone operator of France, and has been selected to supply the Swedish national telephone operator, Telia, with ADSL lines.

ADSL systems will also be supplied in the near term future for evaluations by various United States Telcos and Internet Service Providers. ADSL is a technology that allows broadband access over regular copper telephone wires, permitting Telephone Operators to offer services to their customers such as high speed access to the Internet, networked multimedia, work from home (telecommuting) and ATM to the home.

Orckit's ORvision II is the world's first commercially available Echo Cancellation ADSL modem that meets and exceeds the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) enhanced performance requirements.

ORvision II is designed for high volume production, and it is capable of transmitting up to 8.192 Mbps downstream and 768 Kbps upstream. Orckit's ADSL technology is based on two Orckit- proprietary ADSL digital chips, manufactured by LSI Logic for Orckit. ORvision II makes use of unique echo cancellation and multi-channel transmission for up to 10 channels.

ORvision II is based on Discrete Multi-Tone line code (DMT), which is the only ADSL line code that has been adopted by the worldwide ETSI and ANSI standards bodies. Self-Designed Chips: The Core of Both ORvision II and FastInternet Systems

Orckit's ADSL chips are used in their ORvision II and FastInternet Systems. ORvision is a multi-channel, Rate Adaptive system, enabling telephone operators to install one type of modem for multiple distance capabilities.

The ORvision achieves this by measuring the line and automatically providing the highest data rate suitable for the distance between the subscriber and the Central Office.

Orckit's FastInternet is an integrated xDSL system, employing both ADSL and Orckit's Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) technologies in a central-office based network concentrator. FastInternet employs extensive network security and administrative features, operating over Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines.

Both ORvision II and FastInternet solve the local loop bottleneck, making it possible to provide full service broadband services (ATM, video) as well as making surfing the Internet fun and easy. Orckit's ADSL Product Tests Above the Rest

ORvision was featured in the world's first published ADSL benchmarking tests, initiated by Tele.Com magazine (October, 1996), and implemented at National Software Testing Laboratories Inc., both of which are subsidiaries of the McGraw-Hill publishing company in the United States. Of all the ADSL modem vendors that were invited to participate, only Orckit and one other company submitted their ADSL modems for testing.

After testing for raw throughput, FTP and latency, Kieran Taylor, a telecommunications analyst with Telechoice Inc., wrote that "local phone companies should be able to count on digital subscriber line technology to bring high-speed services like Internet access and remote LAN access to residential and corporate customers."

As displayed in the report's raw data, Orckit's ORvision achieved the highest throughput in seven out of nine test-loops, and succeeded in transmitting in even the most difficult test loops (up to 15,000 feet). Orckit's ORvision ADSL was the only modem to achieve a throughput of nearly 7 Mbps, while maintaining an upstream data rate of 660 Kbps.

Utilizing it's Rate Adaptive functionality, Orckit's ORvision ADSL achieved a raw throughput of 5.8 Mbps on CSA8 (12,000 ft. loop), as compared to 4.1 Mbps and 1.5 Mbps throughput achieved by the other vendor's two modems.

First generation ORvision ADSL modems were also tested and evaluated by various Telephone Operators, including USWest (USA), Bezeq (Israel) and France Telecom. The USWest trial included many high-speed data applications simultaneously, including four video-channels supporting video-on-demand, video-conferencing, as well as basic rate ISDN data and phone connection and Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), all over a single copper pair. ORvision II's Features

ORvision II features a lifeline passive POTS splitter, which allows simultaneous voice telephone alongside the data services. The splitter is completely passive, so it does not affect the voice service of the telephone.

Plus, the POTS splitter keeps the voice telephone line hooked up to the telco through an analog connection. Therefore, even during a power failure, the telephone line will remain useable.

ORvision II is simple and inexpensive to install, similar to other DSL products. DSL technology requires no line conditioning or repeaters; this reduces costly technician-hours, avoiding the necessity to purchase additional equipment.

Telcos wanting to offer their subscribers fast access services need only install an ORvision II line card at the Central Office (into an Orckit-designed Orvision sub-rack) and a small stand-alone modem, (10 x 11 x 2.5 in.), at the subscribers' home or business.

ORvision II makes use of unique echo cancellation mechanisms for enhanced performance, which allows the sharing of the ADSL's low frequency bandwidth for both upstream and downstream transmission. In addition, ORvision II provides ten separate channels that can be utilized separately or together for different applications: four downstream channels and three bi-directional (upstream and/or downstream) channels. Power consumption of the modem is approximately ten watts at the highest data rate throughput.

ORvision II includes many interfaces, including 10BaseT, RS422, and V.35, and is expected to include E1 and T1 interfaces in the near term future. Orckit Communications

Orckit is active in the many standards bodies concerning ADSL. Dan Arazi, marketing vice president of Orckit, is a board member of the ADSL Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of ADSL.

In addition, Orckit is a founding member of the DMT Interoperability Group, a group of ADSL vendors which has met several times this year to pursue interoperability among DMT-based ADSL modems. The group has agreed to start "discovery testing" of different vendors ADSL modems.

Orckit Communications Ltd., is a telecommunications company that develops and manufactures a wide range of high-speed local loop communications systems that take advantage of state-of-the-art digital signal processing and VLSI technologies, including ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), HDSL (High bit rate Digital Subscriber Line) and VDSL (Very high bit rate Digital Subscriber Line).

Orckit was founded in 1990 and has headquarters at 38 Nahalat Yitzhak Street, Tel-Aviv, 67488 Israel, +972 3 696 2121.
