<<OT: Very, Very True... >>
Guardian, your points are very well taken. I have seen SI posts and posters quoted in Wired articles and other places. (I find that concept wholly bizarre.) Not to mention the fact that some are picked up as gospel and played out on Yahoo! message boards. (I wonder sometimes if that's not just somebody quoting themselves under another network identity.)
And, as to your initial post on this subject, again I couldn't agree more about THE FACT that there is a TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL for playing loose with the truth. It's TOO EASY here in cyber-land to proffer little things that seem valid... but on further examination... prove very wrong. It's also VERY VERY easy to put, through repetition, a negative (or positive) spin on events. In fact, I've noted now on three threads where I've lurked but never posted that REPETITION is fairly critical to spinning something out... whether its repetition of questions or repetition of one-half of a fact. When seeing this, I now almost on reflex, come to question the poster's credibility or intentions. That may be an unfortunate over-reaction on my part. But, repetition can poison the waters and make the false appear true... again, false optimism or false pessimism, I really don't care which.
Sorry for commenting on your posts at length. But, I think they are provocative in the best sense of that word...
Best Regards,
