Okay. First off, those statistics are all gun-related deaths, including suicides and police action. So it's a little hard to draw conclusions based on these numbers.
If we removed all guns worldwide, yes, teen death rates would drop significantly. But a national gun ban would have less impact than you'd like. There would still be guns coming in from our southern border.
Guns are like atom bombs. You cannot uninvent them. They are a permanent fixture in our armies and police forces. And in the world's more enlightened countries, they are available to the people for self-defense.
I think that gun violence in this country is a violence issue more than a gun issue. Sure, take away all the guns and the violence will be harder to express. I'll bet stabbings will go up though. With or without guns the gang culture is all about the violent application of force.
Take away all the guns, and I see two consequences I don't like.
1) Individual freedom will have been carved up on the altar of collective social engineering.
2) No police force is quick or pervasive enough to head off truly violent crime. How long will it take for an intruder to rape or strangle you from the first second you're aware there's a problem? How long will it take a police officer to arrive on the scene, again measured from the first second you're aware there's a problem?

In my opinion we now have the worst of both worlds. We do not have the sort of police force and judicial horsepower to address the massive amount of violent crime in our society. At the same time, we are steadily raising the bar on what a citizen can do to protect himself.

I argue that a national license program to carry concealed weapons, including handguns of any type, would have a salutary effect on violent crime in the USA. While it would not do much about gangland killings, it would deter or interdict the many acts of violence wrought upon folks in their cars or the mall parking lot.

If you look at the states which have enacted "shall-issue" concealed-carry laws in the last five years, you will see a near absence of improper gun use by licensees. So I won't support an argument that getting guns into the right hands is a recipe for disaster.
