I'm in 35.250 Litronic and UWI.Com Partner with VeriSign to Provide Integrated Solution; 12 Federal Agencies Engage in Pilots to Secure Online Applications
WASHINGTON, Card Tech/Secure Tech, April 27 /PRNewswire/ --VeriSign(TM), Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of enterprise public key infrastructure (PKI) solutions, today announced that 12 Federal government agencies have chosen VeriSign's E-Commerce Solutions to pilot the use of digital certificates by employees, trading partners, and citizens for secure communications and transactions over open networks. VeriSign E-Commerce Solutions, announced in January 1998, allows organizations to quickly and easily establish themselves as certificate authorities (CAs) using front-end software coupled with VeriSign's mission-critical back-end certificate processing services. The offering provides a high level of control over end- user authentication, certificate issuance and management, scalability to millions of certificates, fast time to market, and low cost of ownership. "We started the Federal Markets Division over a year ago to deliver our core products and services to this specialized enterprise segment," said Richard Yanowitch, VP of marketing at VeriSign, Inc. "The pilot adoption of our solution by this wide variety of agencies demonstrates that the Federal government is embracing the promise of e-commerce while ensuring that communications and transactions remain secure." In an ongoing effort to streamline key processes while simultaneously reducing costs, federal agencies are embracing the benefits of intranets, extranets, and the Internet to communicate and transact with employees, citizens, and trading partners. The large and disparate universe of users, diverse hardware and software systems, and massive aggregates of data make the Federal government a well-suited environment in which to deploy solutions based on open networks and interoperability. However, in order to fully embrace and leverage these solutions, government agencies need to ensure that their applications are secure and private. VeriSign digital certificates provide significantly stronger security for access control than usernames and passwords; serve as non-forgeable electronic identity badges for users to access privileged corporate data via the Internet; and provide confidentiality for internal and external communications by enabling users to digitally sign and encrypt email messages. "While the core security needs for the Federal government are not different than the commercial sector, there is a heightened awareness of the importance of sensitive information that gets moved through government networks every day," said Nick Piazzola, VP of VeriSign's Federal Markets Division. "With VeriSign E-Commerce Solutions' blend of software and processing services, federal agencies can get up and running as Certificate Authorities (CAs) in days and feel confident that their information is secure." To serve the needs of government agencies implementing security for a range of e-commerce applications, VeriSign E-Commerce Solutions includes PKI software modules, which allow enterprises to automate and integrate digital certificate lifecycle management functions seamlessly with existing databases and legacy applications. At the heart of VeriSign E-Commerce Solutions is VeriSign OnSite, a breakthrough solution which combines the customizable features and control of a product with VeriSign's world-class expertise and experience in operating a large-scale certificate management operation. "The Federal government is using digital certificates for security and privacy in pilot situations today, and they are on track to fully deploy over the next 12 months," said Kelly Kavanagh, research director at International Data Corporation (IDC). "Agencies will focus on solutions that provide technical interoperability and scalability and are based on commercially- accepted standards." VeriSign's other announcements today -- partnerships with Litronic and UWI.Com -- further enhance the integrated Certificate Authority solution for the Federal government.
VeriSign and Litronic, Inc. Building on an existing partnership between the two companies, VeriSign and Litronic will co-market ProFile Manager with VeriSign OnSite to provide cost- effective smartcard/digital certificate integration for federal agencies. "The combination of digital certificates and smartcards is a powerful one and we are confident ProFile Manager and OnSite will deliver a compelling solution to the federal government," said Chandrah Shah, vice president, Litronic, Inc.
VeriSign and UWI.Com Either in paper or electronic format, the Federal government conducts a lot of its business using forms. The combination of VeriSign and UWI.Com gives organizations the ability to create, distribute, and archive digitally signed forms across the Internet. "We're excited about the opportunities to marry forms delivery and digital certificate solutions to this critical market," said Eric Jordan, president, UWI.Com.
