Canada Rig Count Down 14 To 97.
U.S. Rig Count Down 18 To 880


NEW YORK, April 24 - The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural
gas in the United States stood at 880 as of April 24, down 18 from the
previous week, and nine below the year-ago total of 889, Baker Hughes
Inc reported.

The number of rigs drilling on land fell by 12 to 723, while rigs
working offshore fell by six to 136. The number of rigs active in
inland waters remained at 21.

Among the individual states, the biggest changes occurred in Louisiana,
down by 10, and in Colorado, Texas, and Wyoming, all down by three.

The Gulf of Mexico rig count fell by six to 135.

The number of rigs searching for gas fell by two to 599, the number of
rigs searching for oil fell by 16 to 278, while the number of misc.
drilling projects remained at three.

There were 224 rigs drilling directionally, 53 drilling horizontally
and 603 drilling vertically.

In Canada, the number of working rigs fell by 14 from the previous
week, to 97, versus 185 one year ago.

The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring for oil
and gas, not those producing oil and gas.

U.S. Gulf Rig Count Down One to 168

NEW YORK, April 24 - - There were 168 rigs under contract in the U.S.
Gulf as of April 24, down one from the previous week, Offshore Data
Services said.

The utilization rate for rigs working in the Gulf, based on a total
fleet of 176, was 95.5 percent.

The number of working rigs in the European/Mediterranean area rose by
one to 107 rigs under contract out of a total fleet of 111, a
utilization rate of 96.4 percent.

The worldwide rig count remained at 582 out of a total fleet of 609,
with a utilization rate of 95.6 percent.
