copland isnt on the backburner, they just decided to release parts of the os when they were ready. there was a breakdown in a recent BYTE of when different updates would be released.
many people think this is some kind of failure on apples part, but it really isnt. there have been betas of copland for a while, and they do not wish to release them. management believes that at this point the company can not afford to release half baked SW. the gradual path is better in the long run.
as for BE, their OS is VERY good. it runs in a small space and uses system resources, like memory, well. there are several different scenarios, but first you should know that the two OS's are incompatible.
1) aapl converts to beOS. beOS is made compatible with opendoc, which enables it to run new macOS app's, but the old runs wont run.
2) aapl is going after the developer market, with high end boxes that use the beOS. this is likelysince it would be a very profitable situation. it would give aapl an opening into video/film development and editing, which is a very lucrative market.
a purchase of be is a good idea, but if they pay more than 50 million for the company it is not. if it costs more than 50, then aapl should buy a license.
