News from the H&Q conference today as reported in theStreet.com:

All Eyes on Dell

There was also a full house for Dell (DELL:Nasdaq), the only PC
maker that still seems immune to the channel-stuffing inventory
problems of competitors Compaq (CPQ:NYSE) and IBM
(IBM:NYSE).

Tom Meredith, Dell's chief financial officer, was typically
confident during his 15-minute presentation, saying that the box
maker will shortly pass IBM to become the No. 2 PC maker
worldwide. "Even though our market share has gone from 1% to
just over 6% in the last five years, we still have lots of head
room," he said.

Dell's fiscal year ends in January, with the first quarter ending
this Friday. But that didn't stop Meredith from commenting on
first-quarter growth. "We are restrained from saying what the
quarter is, except to say demand is good," said Meredith,
pausing for dramatic effect, "actually robust." The room broke out
with knowing laughter and you had to wonder if fund managers
would be buying the stock on today's dip. (The stock was down
about 4% in midafternoon trading to 73 1/8.)
