[annual meeting trivia] white apple logo, threat or menace?
haven't seen this discussed, but, if promulgated in the right way, could take on the shadowy proportions of the satanic rumormongering associated with the proctor & gamble logo hubbub.
at the '98 apple annual meeting, an earnest fellow wondered aloud about the plain white apple image used against a blue backdrop in one of the presentation slides. although many thought it was a trivial observation, i also thought it curious, having seen it creep in not only with the QuickTime Pro desktop ad after QT3 installation, but with pictures of the nascent powerbook G3. that is, no familiar rainbow stripes in the apple -- just bleached white.
sjobs answered that "we've always had monochromatic versions of the apple around", and "don't you like it?".
also, a rumor arises that the embossed apple on the top of the new laptop case actually lights up when the unit is on. technically this could be easy, in that the backlight could be made to shine thru luminous plastic in relief. but would this be in the white appearing in the photo mockups, or perhaps in a rainbow glow?
we'll know the answer to that one in a few days. if it's rainbowless, many apple traditionalists (such as my four-year-old twins) will make short work of that.
otherwise, much ado can be ascribed to the psychological underpinnings of any collateral ad material change. is white a colorless symbol of death, or a full-spectrum expression of purity? might it represent reincarnation of a new apple, hindu-style?
