Norton does have a disk defragmenter and some other diagnostic tools as part of the Norton Utilities for NT Version 2.0 symantec.com . But no byte level disk editor or NT version of the Norton Disk Doctor are advertised.

If you are using NT Workstation, you may want to get a copy of the NT Workstation Resource Kit for 4.0. Chapters 20 through 22 contain useful information about preparing for and recovering from a variety of problems. Included in the CD (that is part of the kit) are some tools that allow you to save critical system information (such as the Master boot record) to bootable floppies. A byte level disk editor is another utility included here.

Because of the dearth of software that is specific to the NTFS file system, some authorities recommend using a small FAT partition for your system disk. This partition would allow you to use a variety of DOS/Windows utilities on a bootable floppy to access the drive if it failed to boot.

There is also a freeware program called NTFSDOS. This program allows you to load NTFS drives directly from a booted DOS floppy. Of course, this program does bypass any privileges you have set up and provides read access to any file. It can be found at sysinternals.com along with a host of other, more expensive utilities for NT. The company that wrote it is called System Internals. Another utility they provide and its description may interest you:" ERD Commander is a utility that enables you to boot NT off of a floppy disk in order to access and repair a dead NT installation"

Regards,
Michael
