I recall when they were awarded their franchise. I think it was in '93, along with four other firms on the same day in NY. I haven't seen a similar franchise awarded since. Some of the others (of varying survivability) were Cablevision, and Urban Communications Inc. UC showed the Rev. Al Sharpton as the principal, believe it or not.
Getting back to MFNX, I had been aware of their existence here in NY when the firm was called National Fiber Networks, prior to the Metromedia buy-in and the ensuing IPO, and their focus was more on dark-fiber deployments in the NY Metro area, for carriers and as a provider of dedicated routes for large financial enterprises. I recently met one of their marketing folks on behalf of a banking client, and was very impressed with their buildouts currently under construction and their future route plans.
They continue, to this day, to be an undeterred provider of dark fiber, apparently unaffected by the paranoia that some of the gurus of the day characterize fiber optic carriers with, although they are now far more aggressive in the LD fiber route construction and swapping arena than they were before. They are into expansion into the US Midwest, and UK markets today, for example. Certainly, today they are a new and rejuvenated outfit, to be sure. And no, I don't own them. Tempting, tho.
