SCO's Tarantella Extends its Reach

Latest Version Increases Scalability, Performance, and Integrates Mainframe
Connectivity

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- SCO (Nasdaq: SCOC) today
announced the latest release of its Tarantella application broker
("Tarantella"), featuring enterprise-level scalability, performance
enhancements of up to 78%, new ports to IBM AIX and HP-UX, plus an optional
seamless mainframe connectivity package. Tarantella, the first Application
Broker for network computing, allows users to access any application from any
client, without the need to install any software on the client device.
"Today, our customers are using Tarantella to extend the reach of
applications -- to remote users, vendors and customers," said Ray Anderson,
SCO senior vice president, marketing. "To achieve this requires high levels
of scalability and performance. With this new release, we've focused on
adding enterprise capabilities that increase performance and scalability for
these customers."

Tarantella 1.1 Scales Up to 10,000 Users
The new release provides single-point administration by allowing
organizations to manage up to 50 Tarantella servers from a central location as
part of a Tarantella Array. A Tarantella Array provides system administrators
the ability to perform administrative tasks on a primary Tarantella server,
which is then replicated across multiple Tarantella servers. Utilizing a
Tarantella Array, an administrator can supply a new or updated application to
10,000 users in less than one minute, providing a dramatic savings in cost and
time.
Additionally, new load-balancing capabilities allow administrators to
ensure maximum performance and availability by running user sessions across
multiple Tarantella servers. Organizations can now support these same
10,000 users with no single point of failure.

Enhanced Client Performance and Reach
Tarantella Version 1.1 introduces two new features which dramatically
increase performance, especially over low-bandwidth connections. The new
version of Tarantella provides an intelligent caching of Java classes on
client systems, which maximizes user performance and minimizes the time it
takes to login to Tarantella and launch applications. By utilizing the
caching mechanism, Tarantella improves application launch times up to 78% when
used over a LAN and brings even more dramatic performance improvements for
dial-up connections.
"Customers have found that display performance using Tarantella over a
dial-up connection is 20 times faster than a native X server," said SCO's Ray
Anderson. "By choosing Tarantella, customers not only save the time and
expense of installing PC X Servers on every PC, they also increase the
performance of their applications."
To overcome the current instability of Java implementations for Windows
3.11, Tarantella 1.1 provides a native client. Tarantella automatically
determines when a JVM is not installed and provides a native client for
automatic installation. These native clients dramatically increase
performance in login and application launch times.

Seamless Mainframe Connectivity
A complete, integrated solution for accessing 3270 applications -- Cleo
TN3270E from Interface Systems -- is now available as an add-on to the base
Tarantella product. This software provides seamless connectivity to the
thousands of mainframe 3270 applications found in enterprise organizations,
without the addition of any software on the client.
"Many of our clients have asked how they can web-enable their mainframe
applications," said Bob Nero, president and CEO of Interface Systems. "With
Tarantella, they can do exactly that, and do it without changing the
application in any way. Our clients also say that they're very impressed with
Tarantella's quick deployment capabilities."

Extending the Range of Host Platforms
Tarantella Version 1.1 also extends its range of host platforms with new
ports for IBM AIX and HP-UX. These are in addition to the previously
announced ports for SCO UnixWare, UnixWare 7 and Sun SPARC Solaris.
"The SCO port of Tarantella to IBM AIX is strategic for our customers,"
said Miles Barel, Software Marketing Manager, IBM RS/6000. "Combining the
power of Tarantella with the scalability of the RS/6000 system family, from
uni-processors and SMPs to large SP complexes, provides them with the
reliability and control necessary to manage heterogeneous applications across
their enterprise."

Pricing and Availability
Pricing for Tarantella remains at US $395 per user. The Cleo 3270
Connectivity Pack for Tarantella is $195 per user. Tarantella Version 1.1
begins shipping on May 11.
