rket; Company Doubles Size of Its New York Territory, Begins Service to Borough of Queens
PRINCETON, N.J., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- RCN Corporation (Nasdaq: RCNC) announced today that it is bringing its advanced package of phone, cable and Internet service to the New York City Borough of Queens, bringing Queens residents local phone and cable competition and effectively doubling RCN's service territory in the New York metropolitan area.
"Our strong success in Manhattan has led to significant interest in RCN among residents of the outer boroughs, which encouraged us to bring service to Queens earlier than expected," said RCN Chairman and CEO David C. McCourt. "Queens is a tremendous market for RCN, with more than 800,000 households and 1.1 million telephone lines that handle more than 14 million calls per day. There are more telephone access lines in Queens than in 18 of the country's 50 states, more than Alaska, Wyoming and Vermont combined."
As it did in Manhattan, RCN will first offer all-distance phone and Internet services to Queens residents. This will be followed by the company's full suite of products over its own fiber optic network by the end of 1998.
Mike Adams, President of RCN's Technology and Network Development Group, said the company is already beginning the process of network design. "Our efforts in Queens will be significantly aided by the fact that we can call upon the significant resources and support staff already present in our successful Manhattan operation."
In Manhattan, RCN already provides phone, cable and Internet service to nearly 80,000 customers. The company has built and activated facilities in more than 500 buildings in Manhattan, with design and construction currently underway in 60 more. |
