Abby to the rescue

At midday, almost as reliably, Abby Joseph Cohen, the superstar strategist of the 1990s at
Goldman Sachs, sent clients a calming note, complete with an analogy she's used before
when investors were scared. Stocks are fairly valued, she said. The market is merely on a
step in its ''staircase pattern'' in which it climbs, levels and climbs again. She says seasonal
trends are at work, with investments in mutual funds heaviest between January and April 15
each year. Remember it as Cohen's stairway to heaven (I don't think this is what Led Zepplin had in mind <g>).
