Intergraph launches new entry-level TD PCs and Personal Workstations with superior price and 3D performance to SGI's O2
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1996--
New TD PCs and Personal Workstations starting at $1,495!
Intergraph Computer Systems today announced its new product line of TD PCs and Personal Workstations -- starting at $1,495 -- that extends its highly acclaimed 3D graphics workstation-class capability to the entry-level 3D graphics markets.
The new product line consists of the new Pentium(R) processor-based TD-20 and Pentium Pro processor-based TD-200 PCs, as well as the TD-310, TD-410, and TD-610 Personal Workstations which include single, dual, and the industry's first quad Pentium Pro processor personal workstation. These new TDs set a new standard for high-powered graphics and system performance, outpacing SGI's newly announced proprietary O2 line of workstations in both power and affordability.
The new TD PCs and Personal Workstations offer a wide range of system performance and graphics options -- including Intergraph's recently introduced Intense 3D graphics card -- offering creative and technical professionals the flexibility to tailor a graphics system to fit their budget requirements. With Intense 3D, Intergraph's add-in 3D graphics card, the TD-200 delivers professional-level 3D graphics capabilities starting at only $4,995!
"With the new TDs, users can now choose from a wide range of graphics and system performance based on their budget, application, or project needs," said Wade Patterson, president of Intergraph Computer Systems. "There is no need for price-sensitive users to compromise on quality and performance, because now everyone can have an Intergraph machine. In addition, these new machines offer greater graphics performance and features at a better price than SGI's O2 workstations, and we offer it on an open platform."
Affordability Without Compromise
Intergraph's newly announced TDs represent an expansion of the TD product line, extending downward in price and moving upward in performance with two new affordable PCs and three new personal workstation products. The Intel Pentium processor-based TD-20 and Pentium Pro processor-based TD-200 PCs, starting at $1,495 and $2,595, respectively, are competitively priced yet still offer the quality, service, and support traditionally associated with Intergraph's high-performance hardware.
These new TDs are ideal for users of technical applications such as entry-level CAD (e.g. MicroStation and AutoCAD), as well as multimedia applications such as Web authoring and typical Windows applications such as office automation and business data processing. With the industry's widest variety of 2D and 3D graphics options, the new TDs offer customers low-cost PCs with advanced features for their technical or creative 2D and 3D graphics applications.
"The TD-20 and TD-200 are Intergraph's lowest-cost computer products to date, but we didn't cut corners to bring their prices down," Patterson said. "We designed the TDs to provide the performance and features required by lower-end markets while maintaining the same standards of quality and reliability as our high-end workstations that have become our hallmark. For this reason, we will be able to compete more aggressively in price-sensitive markets, such as entry-level CAD, filling the needs of customers who want affordable personal computers but who also want a higher level of quality and support than is associated with traditional PCs."
Patterson added, "The new TDs also provide our direct and reseller channels with a wider range of price and performance options for a broader customer base."
Outpacing the O2
Intergraph continues to outpace SGI's proprietary RISC/UNIX machines such as the O2 by offering affordable, open-architecture, high-performance hardware solutions. For example, the TD-200 with Intense 3D graphics offers twice the graphics performance (700K triangles per second compared to 366K), more expandability (seven total PCI slots and six total drive bays compared to one half-length PCI slot and two drive bays), and more openness (native Windows NT compared to IRIX and Windows emulation software) -- all at lower pricing than SGI's O2. (See enclosed competitive charts for more details).
From Single to Quad Processors for Higher Performance
Included in the announcement is the introduction of the first personal workstation to incorporate four 200 MHz Pentium(R) Pro processors, the TD-610, which offers unmatched performance for multithreaded applications. The new TD-310/410/610 -- combined with integrated G95 graphics and the first-time offering of Intergraph's Intense 3D add-in 3D graphics card -- offer Intergraph users a new level of flexibility in choosing multiprocessing capability and graphics performance at lower prices to best meet their application or organizational needs.
"With the addition of these new TD personal workstations, our customers can pick and choose from a variety of options and tailor a system that is on target for their applications," Patterson said. "If their applications are multithreaded, such as 3D Studio Max, we can offer them TDs with up to four processors. If they use professional-level CAD software or 3D graphics applications, they can select from a range of graphics options for optimal performance at affordable prices."
Flexible Graphics and Performance Options for Variety of Needs
With multiple 2D and 3D graphics options available, the new TD PCs and personal Workstations provide the flexibility to meet the specific requirements of diverse markets. For example, G76 and G95 graphics options make the TDs well-suited to 2D sketching, drafting, or redline review with applications such as Autodesk's AutoCAD, Bentley's MicroStation, and Intergraph's Imagineer Technical; and ideal for documentation, office automation, financial, and database management applications. With Intense 3D, Intergraph's add-in 3D graphics card, the TD-200 delivers professional-level 3D graphics performance starting at only $4,995 -- a highly attractive solution for applications such as Web, multimedia, and game authoring, as well as 3D design, visualization, modeling, or engineering.
Graphics options for the TD-20 and TD-200 include the following:
-- G76 (1 MB of RAM) for 2D drafting and office automation
applications
-- G76 (2 MB of RAM) for entry-level CAD and higher-resolution
applications
-- G95 (2, 4, or 8 MB of WRAM) for professional-level CAD,
multimedia, and desktop publishing applications
-- Reactor for acceleration of Windows 95-based, Direct3D
applications
-- Intense 3D (16 MB of RAM) for OpenGL - and HEIDI-based 3D
graphics applications, such as animation, mechanical CAD,
or 3D modeling (not supported on TD-20)
Standard components for the TD-20 and TD-200 include 256 KB of secondary cache, up to 256 MB of high-performance RAM, high-capacity EIDE hard drives, an 8X CD-ROM (optional for TD-20), and the user's choice of Windows 95 or Windows NT(R) preloaded. The systems are also sound ready with Sound Blaster-compatible, 16-bit audio hardware integrated on the motherboard. The new TDs' toolless minitower chassis provides seven PCI and ISA slots and six total peripheral bays for further expansion as needs grow.
The new TD-310/410/610 come standard with the following high-performance components:
-- Up to 1 GB of 256-bit, interleaved ECC RAM. The TD Personal Workstations include extremely fast memory, which also offers error protection for business-critical data.
-- Ultra SCSI disk subsystem. With data transfer rates up to 20 MB/sec., Ultra-SCSI offers twice the disk performance of Fast SCSI-2 systems and 25 percent faster performance than Enhanced IDE.
-- Integrated 10/100Base-TX Ethernet. The new systems provide a 100Base-TX Ethernet controller, which senses the network to automatically take advantage of 100 megabit/second data rates, when available.
-- 8X CD-ROM. An 8X CD-ROM provides fast access to a wealth of multimedia and data and design libraries, which are often stored on CDs.
The new TD-310/410/610 also include as standard a PCI bus, 256-bit ECC memory, up to four 200 MHz Pentium Pro processors, dual-screen support, and the Windows NT 4.0 operating system. In addition, the new TDs offer up to 10 PCI and ISA expansion slots for optimum expandability.
Superior Quality, Service, and Support
The new TD PCs and personal workstations offer much more in the way of quality and reliability than traditional PCs. For example, Intergraph services its own systems, rather than relying on support from a third party as many competing vendors do. And, the TD-20 and TD-200 PCs carry the identical three-year warranty (first year onsite) that is included with all Intergraph workstations, backed by a worldwide organization with 2,000 service and support personnel.
Intergraph's service and support stands out among PC vendors after the first year of the warranty period. In the second and third years, Intergraph includes return-to-factory support and even pays the return shipping charges. Most other PC vendors exclude labor and provide only parts during the last two years of the warranty, or they force customers to deliver the systems themselves for repairs.
The new TD-20 and TD-200 PCs and TD-310/410/610 Personal Workstations are built to last. They are manufactured in the same ISO 9002-certified facility in which Intergraph's award-winning, high-end TDZ(TM) 3D Graphics Workstations are built.
