UKH News Update:

CHON-FM 12:30 P.M. NEWS MONDAY, APRIL 27, 1998

The crunching of numbers continues as Keno Hill investors attempt to reopen the silver mine. Yukon government Economic Development minister Trevor Harding says he has met with potential investors in Toronto and he is optimistic. Harding says the company is seeking over $22 million dollars in start up and operational costs. The Faro MLA says potential investors were hesitating because they thought they would have to inherit the cost of running the townsite and environmental conditions. (Harding) "The old sort of hangovers that Falconbridge had in terms of running the property and what I try to is explain as best as I could that they have a new mining method in their plan - does Keno Hill. They also have a less costly operation because they are not responsible in entirety for the mine site and the townsite as they used to be and that brought with it significant cost so there's a lot of reasons given the price of silver that they could may have a profitable operation now." Harding says no firm commitments have been made from potential Keno Hill investors. However, he is much more confident the company will get better hearings now that questions of concern were asked and answered.
