SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--Lycos Inc. (LCOS) said it is confident about its fiscal third quarter and feels "great" about Wall Street's estimates for its results.
"We certainly feel very good about the quarter we are wrapping up" at the end of April, Chief Executive Robert J. Davis said. First Call Corp. forecasts the company will post a loss 18 cents for the period.
Speaking at the Hambrecht & Quist Technology Conference, Davis also told investors the Framingham, Mass., company was poised to unveil an online partnership with an Internet-service provider "soon." He declined to name the company but said the partnership would be a "momentous event" for the company.
Similarly, Lycos will be introducing an automated directory service - using machines and not people - that will challenge Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO), Davis said.
However, he indicated that Lycos wouldn't be partnering with Netscape Communications Corp. (NSCP) to create a Netscape-branded search service. Speculation on Wall Street has centered on Lycos, as well as competitors Excite Inc. (XCIT) and Infoseek Corp. (SEEK), as a potential Netscape partner.
Davis said that Lycos, nevertheless, would play a role on Netscape's redesigned Internet site. As it is, Lycos already gets a smaller amount of traffic from Netscape than competitors, he said. |
