Epitronics Unit of ATMI Expands Capacity and Staff; Expands GaAs Manufacturing and Staff; Offers Evaluation Samples

MESA, Arizona & DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 1998-- Epitronics, a specialty epitaxy business of ATMI, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATMI), announced today that Dr. Hani Badawi has joined as Director of Operations, III-V Division. Dr. Badawi will be leading Epitronics' manufacturing capacity expansion at its III-V Division based in Phoenix, Arizona. Epitronics also announced that evaluation samples of production process-qualified epitaxial wafers from its new Aixtron 2400/2600 G3 MOVPE tool were now available to selected customers.

In announcing Dr. Badawi's appointment, Tim Murray, General Manager of Epitronics' III-V Division said "We are delighted to have Dr. Badawi join us at a most exciting time in our growth. Hani's experience with customer-focused production lines and managing continuous process improvements programs will be a great addition to our team. We are committed to providing our customers with the highest quality materials and technical service to help their business grow. With Hani, we have a seasoned leader for our manufacturing team to help us meet-and exceed-our customers' expectations."

Dr. Badawi's experience includes directing manufacturing operations at gallium arsenide (GaAs) integrated circuit (IC) fabrication lines for Tachonics, Hughes, and ITT-STC. Most recently, he was implementing quality systems at a leading GaAs IC manufacturer.

Epitronics is now providing selected customers with evaluation samples of production process-qualified epitaxial wafers from its new Aixtron 2400/2600 G3 MOVPE tool. The Epitronics' Aixtron production tool is the first GaAs epitaxial machine with full cassette-to-cassette automated wafer handling capability. Dr. Duncan Brown, President of Epitronics said, "Over the past year we've made significant additions to our management team and manufacturing capabilities in order to provide our customers with the quality and capacity they need to make commitments to their customers. We look forward to working with our customers as they build components and systems to meet the demands of their wireless communication, direct broadcast TV, Internet distribution, and satellite-based data and telecommunications systems markets."
